Mission
Westminster Presbyterian Church expects all our congregation
and everything we do, all our programs, functions and
activities, to be aligned to the mission of God in the
world. As a missional church, we understand that the
congregation itself is sent by God to proclaim and to be a
sign of the reign of God. Just as God sent Jesus and his
Disciples out into the world to spread his word, now Jesus
sends our church out into the community and the world for
this same purpose. Our church demonstrates full engagement
in witness to the world, that witness is grounded in Jesus
Christ, who prayed for His Disciples, saying: "As you sent
me into the world, I have sent them into the world." (John
17:18)
YWAM
Westminster Presbyterian Church, Escondido, has participated
with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) for the past 6 years in
building homes for the needy in Tijuana, Mexico. According
to the Mexican government and internationa l organizations,
nearly one in every four Mexicans, about 24 million, are
unable to afford adequate food and housing. Our goal is to
evangelize and serve Mexican families through mission
outreach into the poorest areas in Mexico. We bring the love
of Christ, along with food,
clothing,
beds, stove, furniture, household necessities, and with
support from YWAM, the labor and materials to build homes for
the needy. These debt free homes help these poor families
out of poverty, and reduce sickness due to exposure and dirt
floors. More than a dozen families, parents and teenagers,
along with many other WPC congregation members, travel to
the YWAM Baja facilities in early October each year. We
split into two teams, approximately 25 people per team to
build 2 houses over the weekend. The
houses are 16’ x 20’,
complete
with cement slab, windows and door and wired for
electricity. These houses are the first homes these poor
people have ever had. As we bless these recipient families
with the labor of our hands, we also are blessed for our act
of kindness and generosity, knowing in our hearts that we
have shared a little of the gifts that God has given us. In
turn, we have the opportunity to enjoy the local culture,
share meals, pray with the needy family, and play with their
children. Our adults and teenagers also acquire hands-on
experience and
skills required to build a small house. This is truly a
wonderful mission outreach; one we hope to continue for many
years to come.
